Frequently Asked Questions

What is AdBlue®?

It’s a pure colourless, synthetic urea solution produced to an exact specification from the organic compound Urea and pure demineralized water to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines. It is also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

Why do we need AdBlue®?

Modern technology vehicles (Euro 5 & Euro 6) are fitted with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The usage of the new generation vehicles in South Africa and throughout Africa has and will continue to increase exponentially year-on-year.

Does AdBlue® have an impact on engine performance?

AdBlue® has no direct effect on the functioning of the engine.

Why use AdBlue® if it’s not yet legislated in South Africa?

Developments ahead of legislation based on Euro 5 & Euro 6 trucks are already operating and associated with better operating cost, significant decarbonisation, reduction in both fuel and maintenance cost. Focus and investment to drive company’s sustainability efforts, green policy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance).

Where is the AdBlue® tank filler neck?

Location depends on vehicle model; check owner’s manual or contact dealership for assistance.

How do I check the AdBlue® level?

Most vehicles will display a warning light when AdBlue® levels are running low, check owner’s manual or contact dealership for assistance.

What is the tank capacity for AdBlue® and average range on a full tank?

Passenger vehicles on average 8 to 10 litres (avg. range on a full 10 litre tank = 5,000 to 6,000kms) and commercial vehicles (6x4 truck-tractor) between 90 to 110 litres (avg. range on a full 100 litre tank = 4,000 to 5,000kms).

What happens if vehicle runs out of AdBlue®?

Engine light will go on and vehicle will go into “limp mode” and reduce power.

Is AdBlue® hazardous?

No, it’s non-flammable, non-explosive and harmless to the environment.

What is the shelf-life of AdBlue®?

Up to 12 months if stored below an ambient temperature of 25°C.

Is AdBlue® a fuel additive?

No, each vehicle has a separate AdBlue® tank.

What is the usage of AdBlue® for commercial vehicles?

Simple method to estimate the average AdBlue® consumption per vehicle in litres. Calculate 5% of your fuel needs per 100 kilometres. If a vehicle's engine consumes 45 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, it consumes 2.2 litres of AdBlue® per 100 kilometres. Although this is an average estimate, this calculation is relatively reliable.

What is the usage of AdBlue® for passenger vehicles?

1.5 to 2.0 litres per 1,000kms, the AdBlue® warning light will come on when you have 3 or 4 litres left which will be sufficient to travel another 2,000kms.

How is AdBlue® quality and compliance assured?

Strict adherence to all ISO22241 production, handling and distribution standards and monitored throughout. AdBlue® is batch managed, and laboratory tested, with compliance certification provided for each delivery. The VDA is the only body that can audit and licence the production and distribution of AdBlue®.
